In the Prehistoric area we examine artifacts as early as 15,000 – 9,000 B.P. from the Pine Mountain area. Our exhibition features early tools used for hunting, and early pottery.

Pine Mountain had three names. The first one was Old Hood, which is located on Highway 18 and 354. Old Hood was located near Kings Gap, where the Native Americans and settlers crossed over Pine Mountain.
Chipley was a railroad builder who wanted a town named after him. He had the town of Old Hood relocate a few miles and established a new town called Chipley. The first railroad he built went round trip from Columbus to Chipley. Later he lengthen the route to connect Atlanta.
The Native Americans were forced to move off the land into what is now Alabama. They were mostly people who won land deeds from the Georgia Land Lottery.
